Tube voltage determines the frequency of X-rays, the higher the frequency, the stronger the penetration. In the use of medical x-ray machine photography, tube voltage is not the greater the better, you need to choose the appropriate tube voltage according to the specific needs of the examination and imaging objectives.

Disadvantages of medical x-ray photography tube voltage is too high:

(1) Reduced image contrast

The penetration ability of high-voltage X-rays is too strong, and the absorption difference between different tissues is reduced, resulting in a decrease in image contrast.

For soft tissue imaging (e.g., mammography), high voltage can cause loss of detail and affect diagnosis.

(2) Increased radiation dose

Although high voltage may reduce exposure time, high energy x-rays have a stronger radiobiological effect on deep tissues and may increase the radiation risk to the patient.

(3) Increased equipment loading

High voltage increases the workload of the X-ray machine, which may lead to increased heating of the equipment and shorten the life of the X-ray tube.

(4) Possible increase in image noise

High voltage increases scattered rays, which may lead to increased image noise and reduced image quality.

Problems with low voltage of medical x-ray tube:

Insufficient penetration ability: low voltage x-rays cannot penetrate thick areas or high density tissues, resulting in images that are too dark or fail to show the target area.

Increased radiation dose: In order to obtain adequate image brightness, the exposure time or tube current may need to be increased, thereby increasing the radiation dose to the patient.

Lowering tube voltage slashes CCTA radiation dose.

Medical Radiography Systems

PLX8600 medical x-ray photography system produced by PUMAI medical, in addition to the characteristics of large field of view imaging without the need for splicing, but also has the advantages of high power, large heat capacity, whether it is the photography mode or fluoroscopy mode, the equipment can maintain a long time of continuous work, so that the subject does not need to make an appointment to realize the shooting as you go.

How to choose the right tube voltage for medical radiography?

High voltage is suitable for thick parts or high-density tissues (e.g. bones, obese patients), while low voltage is suitable for thin parts or low-density tissues (e.g. soft tissues).

Depending on the part of the body being examined:

Low voltage (50-70 kV): for soft tissue imaging (e.g. mammography).

Medium voltage (80-120 kV): for routine examinations (e.g. chest, abdominal X-ray).

High voltage (>120 kV): for thick areas or dense tissue (e.g. lumbar spine, obese patients).

Depending on patient size: Larger patients require higher voltages to ensure penetration.

Depending on the imaging objective: if a high contrast image is required (e.g., bone detail), the appropriate voltage should be selected; if overall penetration is required (e.g., chest X-ray), the voltage can be increased appropriately.
