What’s the difference between simple x-ray imaging and Computed Tomography (CT) Scan

Briefly, Both X-ray and CT scans have their own advantages and disadvantages. The primary benefits of an X-ray include its simplicity, speed, and cost-effectiveness, making it suitable for preliminary screening of certain conditions. However, it does come with some radiation exposure and limitations, such as an inability to show three-dimensional structures or differentiate between tissues with similar densities. For a more detailed comparison, please go ahead reading.

x ray machine imaging

What is x ray imaging?

X-ray, formally called radiograph in the medical field, emits radiation through the body.

The image below is an x-ray film which may be familiar to many of us. The X ray film has gray (or blake) and white parts because x ray can pass through soft tissues while it is blocked by areas with high levels of calcium like teeth and bones. The white part is the x-ray blocked part.

What injuries require x ray imaging?

X rays imaging is perfect for detecting

  • fractures
  • lung infections
  • tuberculosis
  • oral

X ray imaging advantages

X-ray was the earliest form of medical imaging, valued for its simplicity, speed, and affordability. It is usually the first line of imaging to see major problems with bones, lung, etc.

X-rays deliver two-dimensional images and are excellent at showing bones and gases due to their density differences.

X ray imaging limitations

However, their ability to resolve soft tissues is limited, and they cannot display minor abnormalities or inflammation.

The primary drawback of X-rays is the associated radiation risk, particularly for sensitive groups like pregnant women and children. Therefore, X-rays should be used only when necessary, minimizing the frequency and dose of exposure.

Additionally, X-rays cannot provide three-dimensional views or distinguish between tissues with similar densities, nor can they show blood vessels or blood flow.

What is CT scan?

CT scan is the abbreviation of “Computed Tomography Scan”. It also sends radiation through the body.

CT scan advantages

Compared to x-ray imaging, CT scan reconstructs three-dimensional cross-sectional images via a computer and provides a much higher level of detailed image. CT’s strengths lie in its ability to produce high-definition, high-resolution, and high-contrast images, making it better than X-rays for visualizing soft tissues and small lesions.

CT scans are fast too, although it takes about 1 minute longer than x ray imaging. CT scan is more detailed than x ray imaging.

What injuries require CT scan?

CT scan imaging is perfect for detecting complex and hidden conditions like

  • brain tumors
  • spinal injuries
  • liver diseases
  • and some organ injuries

Enhanced techniques (such as in coronary angiography or spiral CT) or special contrast agents can further visualize

  • blood vessels and blood flow

CT scan limitations

The main downside is that CT scans involve higher radiation doses than X-rays, posing a greater risk to patients. Hence, CT scans should be conducted only when necessary, preferably using low-dose or low-radiation equipment.

In addition, CT scanning is unable to differentiate tissues with the same chemical composition or display minute spatial structures.
